Three distinct artistic voices intertwine the visible and the hidden, dream and reality, music and myth.

Marie Louise Elshout creates haunting hybrid beings between human and animal drawn and painted with a precision that reveals fragility, ritual, and transformation.

James Johnston, known also from Gallon Drunk, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and PJ Harvey, transforms existential moods into expressive figurative scenes.
As Nick Cave described it: “paintings full of mythic power.”

Special cabinet guest: Peter Doherty — musician, poet, and artist.
Intimate typewriter works and visual notes trace lived experience where words and paper merge into memory.

A dialogue of gesture and introspection, instinct and imagination.

In der kommenden Ausstellung treffen zwei künstlerische Welten aufeinander:

Marie Louise Elshout (NL) erschafft in ihren Werken hybride Gestalten zwischen Mensch und Tier zart gezeichnet, malerisch überlagert, zwischen Schönheit und Abgründigkeit.

James Johnston (UK), bekannt als Musiker von Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey und Gallon Drunk, zeigt expressive figurative Malerei, in der das Mythische auf die Gegenwart trifft „Gemälde voller mythischer Kraft“, wie Nick Cave sagt.

Im Peter Doherty Kabinett verwandelt sich Sprache in Bild. Seine Typoskripte, auf alten Schreibmaschinen getippt, sind visuelle Gedichte zwischen Poesie, Musik und Artefakt.

Drei künstlerische Positionen, die Traum und Realität, Klang und Gestalt verweben.

Marie Louise Elshout (NL) creates hybrid beings between human and animal drawn with delicate precision, painted with layers of color, balancing between beauty and unease.

James Johnston (UK), known as musician with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, PJ Harvey and Gallon Drunk, presents expressive figurative paintings where the mythical meets the present“ paintings full of mythic power,” as Nick Cave described them.

In the Peter Doherty Cabinet, language transforms into image. His typewriter works become visual poems merging writing, rhythm, and material trace.

Three artistic voices weaving dream and reality, sound and image.

Marie Louise Elshout erschafft in ihren Werken hybride Wesen zwischen Mensch und Tier – Projektionen des Unterbewusstseins, Zeichnungen, die zu Gemälden werden.
„Man weiß nie, ob man einen Menschen mit Maske oder einen Primaten im Kleid sieht. Es ist diese Ambivalenz, die das Ganze interessant macht.“

In her works, Marie Louise Elshout creates hybrid beings between human and animal – projections of the subconscious, drawings that become paintings.
“You never know whether you’re looking at a human wearing a mask or a primate in a dress. It’s this ambivalence that makes it interesting.”

Alongside her, James Johnston presents expressive figurative paintings where the mythical meets the contemporary.

In the Peter Doherty Cabinet, language transforms into image his typewritten scripts are visual poems, typed on old traveling machines.

Worlds interwoven between dream and reality.

works by James Johnston and Marie Louise Elshout,
with a special cabinet presentation by Peter Doherty.

James Johnston is a painter and musician.
He is best known as the founder of Gallon Drunk and for his collaborations with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds and PJ Harvey.

His painting, which began on tour in hotel rooms, has evolved into a distinctive figurative language full of energy, colour, and intuitive immediacy. Animals, landscapes, and human figures appear as mirrors of inner states and carriers of mythic resonance.

Nick Cave described his works as “paintings full of mythic power.”

His paintings have been shown internationally and are held in private and public collections.

James Johnston ist Maler und Musiker.
Bekannt wurde er als Gründer von Gallon Drunk sowie durch seine Zusammenarbeit mit Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds und PJ Harvey.

Seine Malerei, die ursprünglich auf Tour in Hotelzimmern entstand, hat sich zu einer unverwechselbaren figurativen Sprache voller Energie, Farbe und intuitiver Direktheit entwickelt. Tiere, Landschaften und menschliche Figuren erscheinen darin als Spiegel innerer Zustände und Träger mythischer Resonanz.

Nick Cave beschrieb seine Werke als „Gemälde voller mythischer Kraft.“

Seine Arbeiten werden international gezeigt und befinden sich in privaten und öffentlichen Sammlungen.
